Currants & Gooseberries Generally

I like these plants because they give me something that does really well in part sun. Blueberries can get by in part sun, but currants and gooseberries really thrive and produce heavily. My gooseberries are fine for fresh eating, but better dried. My Crandall black currants are really tasty fresh; none have made it into the house yet, let alone the dehydrator.

Bountiful Blue Blueberry

Vaccinium 'Bountiful Blue'

Planted summer of 2012
Standard blueberry planting procedure
Daily drip irrigation
Afternoon sun
Mulched with sequoia needles and pine needles
Purchased From Dennis' 7 Dees

This plant looked three or four years old when I bought it.  Semi-evergreen, leaning more to the evergreen than to the semi.  Foliage is blue green, seems to match 'Misty' well.  Smaller, rounded habit.  It's advertised as an ideal landscape blueberry.  I'd say it's pretty good so far.

Himalayan Huckleberry

Vaccinium Glauco-album

Planted spring of 2012
Daily drip irrigation
Afternoon sun
Purchased from Portland Nursery

This was the first plant to visibly suffer from a lack of water in the summer.  I noticed and turned on my drip irrigation timer, which I had left off in the spring.  Flowers turned to small berries which promptly dried up and fell off.  Leaves crisped and turned half black in the summer heat.  The plant had been in a shade house at Portland Nursery.  This plant is an AGM winner, and listed as a full sun plant by the RHS.

I'll leave it in afternoon sun this year.  The new leaves are smaller, perhaps an adaptation to the higher light level.  I'll make sure it has plenty of mulch to keep the roots cool, and if it doesn't do well this year, it goes to the east side of the house where it will have some protection from afternoon sun.

A very pretty small evergreen plant.

Sweet Scarlet Goumi Berry

Eleagnus Multiflora 'Sweet Scarlet'

Planted spring 2011
Afternoon sun
Daily drip irrigation.

This shrub is extremely vigorous.  When planted it was a two foot tall twig.  The berries are tasty when fully ripe, a bit on the small side with a large seed.  It would be much larger without the several summer prunings it got.  If you want an edible deciduous shrub that grows much quicker and larger than a blueberry, it's a good choice.
